After being laid off from his work as a benk teller, Henri Verdoux decides to become the master of an unusual kind of romance scams. Luring women with riches and happy-ever-afters, through slick lies about his identity, he engages in relationships with only one certain actual motif: to kill them.
Inspired by the true story of French serial killer Henri Désiré Landu, Chaplin made this black comedy in the aftermath of World War II, which proved ill-suited for a dark film such as this. However, in hindsight it is regarded as not only a unique proof of Chaplin’s diversity, but also a milestone in black comedy.
