The Powell and Pressburger story is the tale of two romantics and idealists, men of great artistic courage and ambition, who thrived in the face of adversity during World War II, but were eventually brought low by the commercial film industry of the early fifties. Martin Scorsese will bring to bear his peerless film-maker’s eye to reveal, explain and celebrate the many great qualities of their works: their originality, audacity, complexity, intensity and humour.
Our documentary will follow the full trajectory of their career, from their first meeting in 1938 until they parted company in 1957, but will focus particularly on eight major films: The Life And Death of Colonal Blimp (1943), A Canterbury Tale (1944), I Know Where I’m Going (1945), A Matter Of Life And Death (1946), Black Narcissus (1947), The Red Shoes (1948), The Small Back Room (1949) and Tales Of Hoffmann (1951).
