In 1990, visionary director Terry Gilliam had a dream to film the classic story of the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. The film was supposed to star Johnny Depp, Jean Rochefort, and Vanessa Paradis. After struggling for years to get financing for the film, insurance, and a cast in place, Gilliam still traveled to Spain only to watch his dream fall apart in front of his eyes. Gilliam failed to complete his film due from flash floods, personal conflicts, serious injurious and his crew suffering from one setback after another. Lost in La Mancha offers a unique, in-depth look to the story of a film that does not exist.
Directed by filmmakers Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe, Lost in La Mancha may be the first ever ‘un-making of’ documentary about a film that does not exist. The documentary offers a glimpse of a cinematic spectacle and passion project that might have been. The film was nominated for various awards, including a BAFTA and Satellite Award.
