Timeless
In the mid-19th-century, Lola Montès is a famous courtesan, with an eventful and scandalous past as a dancer. Now reduced to performing in a circus, Lola is exploited by the ringmaster who made her the central attraction. In a single circus performance, her whole life story is told. Through flashbacks we get to know her past, her affair with Franz Liszt, marriage with her own mother’s boyfriend, and then her scandalous breakup with conductor Claudio Pirotto.
When Lola Montès was made, it was the most expensive European film yet produced. And it shows – through its miraculous set designs and its fragrant color cinematography. The film is one of the main influences on the beginning of the French New Wave, and holds a steady place in the hearts of film critics worldwide.
