Action, Drama
Blackthorn suggests that Butch Cassidy did not die in Bolivia in 1908, but instead spent the next 20 years there turning into James Blackthorn. It tells the story of an old American named James Blackthorn (alias Butch Cassidy), played by Sam Shepard, who raises horses in Bolivia but is dying and wants to return to the US. However, along the way he crosses paths with a young Spanish mining engineer accused of robbing a mine (Noriega), and the two slowly strike up a friendship.
Beautifully shot and with impressive action, the film is a modern homage to Sergio Leone and the western genre. The director Mateo Gil has been Alejandro Amenabar’s co-scriptwriter on several projects including Agora, the Oscar winning The Sea Inside and Open Your Eyes.
