Comedy, Drama
Shifting seamlessly between the highs and lows of Barney’s life in Montreal as an adult philanderer, and his coming of age in seventies Italy, Barney’s Version follows its hero as he seeks solace through marriage and professional success. He marries three times: His first wife, Clara (Rachelle Lefevre), is an unstable free spirit, his second, Mrs. P (Minnie Driver), is a charming high-society girl and the third is Miriam (Rosamund Pike), the love of his life. Barney’s dad (Dustin Hoffman) gives him a gun as a wedding present, something that, without spoiling too much, inevitably leads to big trouble.
Barry Panofsky is one of the great comic characters of modern literature. Mordecai Richler gave him life as an impulsive, romantic, politically incorrect and fearlessly blunt creature subject to his impulses. And now, Paul Giamatti (Sideways, American Splendor) adds flesh and blood, and a vast emotional range in this immensely enjoyable adaptation. Other actors in this star-studded cast include Dustin Hoffman, Rosamund Pike (An Education) and Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting).
